When The War Is Over …

I hate war.

I even hate the word, because war causes the greatest suffering.

Even so, I used to love watching M*A*S*H, because the war was a metaphor for how to deal with life’s inevitable challenges and the fickle fate we’re all subject to.

In one episode Hawkeye got angry with Radar for his naively innocent positivity, then in an example of the lower ranks “speaking truth to power” Radar confronted Hawkeye, telling him how he had always looked up to and admired him because of his “war against the war.”

What I figured Radar meant, was the way Hawkeye fought every day against the overwhelming odds he was confronted with in what everyone knew was a futile effort.

And how he never gave up, or more significantly, he never gave in.

He kept his spirits high with humor in the face of tragedy and used craziness as a response to the stupid institutional intransigence of the Army; like the running gag about “Army Intelligence.”

When The War Is Over is a hit song by the Australian band Cold Chisel.

I’ve always loved this song, but the word “war” in the lyrics made me uncomfortable.

Before the age of the internet, I figured it was about a soldier coming back home after the Vietnam war and it glorified that in some way, then I found out that the singers wife is a lovely Thai lady, so now when I hear the words “how can I go home and not get blown away?” followed by a sublimely melodic drum intro, which leads into the exquisite tone of a searing guitar solo, I know the song is all about a guy trying to protect his feelings.

So here for your auditory edification, I give you Cold Chisel’s When The War Is Over
